Capacity Building and Awarding of Start-up Kits on Zero Waste Pig (ZWaP) Farming and Goat Production at Anao, Tarlac

eFARM GROW, spearheaded by Project Leader Yhen Estigoy, conducted its first capacity building on identified beneficiaries of ZWaP farming and goat production at Brgy. Suaverdez, Anao, Tarlac last April 28-29, 2022. Attendees of the activity were selected eFARM Project Team, Hon. Rafael M. Naral, Municipal Agricultural Office (MAO), and the 9 beneficiaries: Noel Tamayo, Rene Baniqued, Juanito Cardona, Jurry Velasco, Angelito Peralta for goat production; and Jerico Dela Cruz, Socorro Domingo, Nelson Gamboa for Zero WAste Pig Production.

Day 1

Mr. Alvin Butay, Municipal Agriculturist Officer, stated in his welcome remarks, “Welcome po kayo [eFARM Project Team] dito sa aming munting bayan. Andito po yung aming 9 na mga napiling magsasaka na existing na po yung kanilang production sa pagbababuyan at pagkakambingan. Tunay pong napakahalaga ng araw na ito sapagkat isa na naman po na pwede natin i-apply sa ating mga sakahan o production area. Napapanahon po ito dahil marami pong mga iba’t ibang pwedeng ma-take na, kumbaga masasagasaan nito”.

Mr. Alvin Butay, Municipal Agriculturist Officer, stated in his welcome remarks, “We welcome you [eFARM Project Team] in our humble municipality. Here with us are our 9 chosen farmers with existing pig and goat productions. This day is indeed an important opportunity because we will be able to learn different techniques that we could apply in our production fields or areas. This activity is also timely as we could take several insights from it”.

Right after, Assistant Professor Estigoy presented the project overview of eFARM GROW to further introduce it to the beneficiaries. ”Nagpapasalamat din kami, of course, sa LGU Anao for accommodating yung grupo ng eFARM and for letting us share the technologies of CLSU sa mga taga-Anao, especially kay Mayor [Hon. Naral]”.

Right after, Assistant Professor Estigoy presented the project overview of eFARM GROW to further introduce it to the beneficiaries. ”We would also like to thank, of course, the LGU Anao for accommodating the eFARM Project Team and for letting us share the technologies of CLSU to the people of Anao, especially to Mayor [Hon. Naral]”.

She also explained that one of the primary goals of the project is to put forward the different technologies generated by CLSU through collaborating with the LGUs to conduct capacity building and technical assistance to its chosen beneficiaries. Further, included in their strategies is monitoring and evaluation to ensure the beneficiary’s progress in adapting the technology. This is in hopes to boost the agri-tourism sector of the LGU through linking and upgrading their production sites into agri-tourism areas.

In support of introducing the project, Ms. Cyril Joy Balais, Research Assistant, presented the eFARM Academy Website. She took the beneficiaries in a virtual tour of the platform to help them be familiarized with its contents. Further, she also explained the step-by-step process on how interested lifelong learners could enroll and access the courses offered in its learning management system (LMS).

Before proceeding on the lecture proper of Zero Waste Pig (ZWAP) Production, a pre-test was given to assess the beneficiaries’ knowledge of the topic. Afterwards, Dr. Antonio J. Barroga, ZWAP Resource Person, discussed how to make a Do It Yourself (DIY) low cost plastic drum biogas digester (PDBD). It was followed by the experiential learning and awarding of start-up kit at the home of Ms. Socorro A. Domingo where the PDBD was personally installed and supervised by Dr. Barroga. Further, a post-test evaluation was conducted to assess learning of the participants after the lecture.

Similar to the approach to the first technology, a pre-test and post-test on goat production were given before and after the lecture. Mr. Neal A. Del Rosario, Goat Production Resource Person, discussed what kinds of forages should be planted and fed to ruminants, and other appropriate ingredient proportions on goat feeding and nutrition.

Before the activity ended, Hon. Mayor Naral took time to visit the venue. He stated in his message that, “Una po, nais ko po na batiin ng magandang hapon ang bawat isa, at magpasalamat sa ating bisita na galing pa sa CLSU eFARM Team. Kami po at nagpapasalamat dahil alam po namin na maraming napulot ang aming mga kababayan sa inyo lectures sa eFARM Academy. Sana po ay huwag kayong magsawa na tulungan ang aming bayan dahil ang mga farmers po namin dito ay masisipag talaga. Tamang tama po ang itinuro ninyo sa amin. Makatutulong po ng malaki sa pag-aalaga ng kambing at baboy”.

Before the activity ended, Hon. Mayor Naral took time to visit the venue. He stated in his message that, “First of all, I would like to greet everyone good afternoon, and thank our guests from CLSU eFARM Team. We are very grateful because we know that our constituents will learn tons of new knowledge through the lectures of eFARM Academy. We hope that you will not get tired of helping our municipality as I will guarantee that our farmers are hardworking. These learnings are really appropriate for us because it will help a lot on our goat and pig production”.

The project team also took the opportunity to award the certificates of appreciation and participation to the resource persons and participants, respectively, in the presence of Hon. Mayor Naral.

Day 2

The day started with the awarding of start-up kits for goat production where each beneficiary was given a breeder (or bulugan). Further, as an experiential learning activity, Mr. Del Rosario provided the materials needed to produce a Urea Molasses Mineral Block (UMMB) that serves as a food supplement providing adequate quantity of nutrients and slow ingestion of urea leading to efficient microbial protein production and improved digestibility.

The beneficiaries were also taught about the basics on how to distinguish abnormalities or diseases. The training was concluded with profiling of the beneficiaries where they were asked about their opinion on eFARM Academy.
